Mirza Khalil Ahmad Baig (born 1 January 1945, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh) is a distinguished Urdu linguist, stylistician, scholar, and academic. He earned his Ph.D. in Linguistics from Aligarh Muslim University in 1975 and spent most of his academic career at the same institution, serving as Head of the Department of Linguistics from 2001 until his retirement in 2006.
Apart from teaching at Aligarh Muslim University, he served as Principal of the Urdu Teaching and Research Centre in Solan, Himachal Pradesh, established under the Central Institute of Indian Languages. He also pursued advanced studies in linguistics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and later taught as a professor at King Khalid University in Saudi Arabia.
Baig has made significant contributions to Urdu linguistics, stylistics, sociolinguistics, language history, and literary criticism. His research on the origin and evolution of Urdu, linguistic theory, and stylistic analysis has earned wide recognition. While deeply influenced by the linguistic theories of his mentor, Dr. Masood Husain Khan, he has also presented independent views on the historical development of the Urdu language.
His major works include Urdu Ki Lisani Tashkeel, Urdu Zaban Ki Tarikh, Zaban, Uslub aur Uslubiyat, Lisani Masa'il-o-Mabahis, Tanqeed aur Uslubiyati Tanqeed, and several other influential books. He is widely regarded as one of the leading Urdu linguists and stylisticians of contemporary times.
