Profile of Raghubir Malhotra Shakir
Raghubir Malhotra “Shakir” (Born: 7 October 1935 – Died: 18 July 2000) was a distinguished jurist, poet, and refined aesthete. He practiced law at the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court, and later served as a barrister in England. He also held the position of Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Delhi.
Born in Sialkot, he developed an early and deep affinity for culture, music, and poetry. He was a true proponent of the Ganga-Jamuni composite culture. His poetry reflects dignity, contemplation, and a subtle, lingering poignancy. A devoted admirer of Indian classical music, he composed melodies and sang himself; its rhythm and musicality are distinctly woven into his verse.
In the final years of his life, he made London his home, yet his commitment to justice, the arts, and the shared cultural heritage of the subcontinent remained unwavering throughout his life.
