A شرف sharaf (inf. n. of شرف 'to be or become exalted,' &c.), s.m. Highness of rank, &c., exaltation, eminence, excellence, rank, grandeur, glory, honour, dignity, nobility:—sharaf-baḵẖsh, adj. Conferring honour, &c.:—sharaf le-jānā (-par), To bear away the palm (from), to excel, surpass:—sharaf-nāk, adj. Honourable, noble, &c.:—sharaf-yāb, adj. Ennobled, honoured.

A شريف sharīf (v.n. fr. شرف 'to be high, or eminent,' &c.), adj. Of high rank or dignity, exalted, eminent, honourable, noble, of good family, high-born; possessing glory or dignity; legitimate;—a title of honour of any descendant of the Prophet, as also of the rulers of Mecca; a prince, a chief or head (e.g. sharīf-ě-qaum, 'chief or head of a tribe or caste'):—sharīfu-n-nafs, adj. Noble of soul.
