Profile of Dr. Israr Ahmad
Identity: Islamic Thinker and Exegete of the Quran
Dr. Israr Ahmad was born on April 26, 1932, in Hisar district (now Haryana, India). Following the partition of India, his family migrated to Pakistan and settled in Lahore. He obtained his M.B.B.S. degree from King Edward Medical College, Lahore, in 1954 and practiced medicine for some time. Later, in 1965, he completed his M.A. in Islamic Studies from the University of Karachi. During his student days, he remained associated with the Islami Jamiat Talaba and later joined the Jamaat-e-Islami. However, owing to ideological differences regarding electoral politics, he distanced himself from the party in 1957.
Dr. Israr Ahmad is regarded as one of the sub-continent’s most prominent Islamic thinkers, Quranic exegetes, and preachers of Islam. In 1971, he gave up his medical practice to dedicate his life entirely to the propagation and service of Islam. He established the 'Anjuman Khuddam-ul-Quran' in 1972, founded 'Tanzeem-e-Islami' in 1975, and launched the 'Tehreek-e-Khilafat Pakistan' in 1991. He championed the establishment of an Islamic society based on the Quran and Sunnah, the revival of the Khilafat system, and the intellectual and moral reformation of the Muslim Ummah. In 1981, he also served as a member of General Zia-ul-Haq's Federal Council (Majalise-e-Shoora).
Dr. Israr Ahmad rendered extraordinary services in making the lessons and comprehension of the Holy Quran accessible to the masses. His televised Quranic lectures and addresses on Pakistan Television earned him widespread renown, while hundreds of his audio and video discourses were broadcast globally and translated into multiple languages. His Quranic teachings and lectures received immense appreciation across Pakistan, India, the Middle East, Europe, and North America.
He authored numerous books on Islam, the Quran, Pakistan, Iqbal, and Islamic thought, many of which have been translated into English and other foreign languages. His prominent publications include "Quran Ke Hum Par Paanch Huqooq", "Islam Aur Pakistan", "Allama Iqbal Aur Hum", "Istehkam-e-Pakistan", "Musalman Ummaton Ka Mazi, Haal Aur Mustaqbil", "Islah-e-Muashara Ka Qurani Tasawwur", "Nabi Akram Se Hamare Taalluq Ki Bunyaden", "Tauba Ki Azmat Aur Taseer", "Haqeeqat Wa Aqsaam-e-Shirk", and "Malfoozat-e-Dr. Israr Ahmad". In recognition of his Islamic philosophy and religious contributions, the Government of Pakistan honored him with the Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 1981.
Death: Dr. Israr Ahmad passed away on April 14, 2010, in Lahore.
