Identity: Researcher of Unani Medicine, Medical Historian, Translator, and Manuscriptologist

Hakim Fakhre Alam (pen name: Hakim Fakhre Alam, poetic name: Akhtar) was born on 10 January 1971 in Bhourmau village, Azamgarh district, Uttar Pradesh, India. He has been based in Aligarh for the past three decades. He is widely recognized as a distinguished scholar of Unani medicine, Islamic studies, and Urdu language and literature, as well as an author, translator, medical historian, manuscriptologist, physician, and educationist.

He obtained the Fazilat degree from Madrasatul Islah, Saraimeer (Azamgarh), where he studied Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Hindi, and English languages and literature. He later earned a Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) in 1999 and an M.D. in Ilmul Advia (Pharmacology) in 2003 from Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, Aligarh Muslim University.

Following his graduation, he served as a lecturer at ZVM Unani Medical College, Pune, worked as a Unani Expert in the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL) project of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and also served as a Medical Officer in Uttar Pradesh. Since July 2006, he has been associated with the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, New Delhi, where he currently holds the position of Scientist-IV. His contributions to Unani medicine, clinical research, and manuscript studies are widely acknowledged.

His principal areas of specialization include classical Unani literature, history of medicine, fundamental principles of Unani medicine, and the study and editing of medical manuscripts. His notable books include Tibbi Akhlaqiyyat, Rumuz-e-Dawasazi, Unani Tib Ka Mughal Aur Bartanvi Ahed, Urdu Tibbi Mutarjimeen, Hindustan Ki Tbbi Darasgaahein, Razi-e-Hind, Hakim Syed Zillur Rahman: Ek Mutala, Aks-e-Khama, Unani Tib Mein Tarikh-e-Qarabadin-Navesi, Unani Tib Mein Bayaz-Navesi Ki Riwayat, Unani Tib Mein Mujarrabat-Navesi Ki Riwayat, and Unani Tib Mein Matab-o-Mamool Aur Dastoor-Navesi Ki Riwayat. He has also critically edited, translated, and researched important classical medical works by Galen, Al-Razi, Najibuddin Samarqandi, and other eminent physicians.

One of his most significant scholarly achievements is the compilation of a four-volume encyclopaedic work on Experimental Literature in Unani Medicine, introducing nearly one thousand medical texts and their authors through rigorous research. He has published more than one hundred research papers in leading national and international journals and writes regularly on medicine, public health, and social issues.

In recognition of his scholarly, literary, and scientific contributions, he has received numerous prestigious honours, including the Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy Award (2017, 2019), Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Award, Khalil Abbas Siddiqui Award, Hakim Mohammad Ashraf Memorial Award, Allama Hakim Mohammad Kabiruddin Award, Ibn Sina International Award, Hakim Ajmal Khan Global Award, and the Mohammad Shafi Alig Award.

He has served as editor, editorial board member, and scientific advisory board member of several academic and research journals. He is also actively associated with the All India Unani Tibbi Conference, the All India Unani Tibbi Congress, and several other national academic and scientific organizations.
