Died : 04 May 1997 | Lucknow, Uttar pradesh

Identity: Eminent Islamic Scholar, Traditionist (Muhaddith), Author, and Founder of the journal 'Al-Furqan'.

Maulana Muhammad Manzoor Nomani was born on December 15, 1905, in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Sufi Muhammad Hussain, was a respected merchant and landowner. He received his early education at Madrasa Siraj-ul-Uloom in his hometown and later studied Arabic sciences at Darul Uloom Mau, Azamgarh. For higher religious studies, he enrolled at Darul Uloom Deoband, completing the 'Fazilat' course in just two years and graduating with top honors in 1927.

After completing his studies, he taught in Amroha for three years. Later, at the request of Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi, he joined Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow, where he served for nearly four years.

In 1934, Maulana Nomani launched the monthly journal "Al-Furqan" from Bareilly (later published from Lucknow). Initially an academic and intellectual periodical, it later became a significant voice for religious, reformative, and doctrinal discussions. His writings are characterized by strong reasoning, religious fervor, intellectual depth, and a lucid style.

He was among the founding members of Jamaat-e-Islami. During its establishment in 1941, he played a key role in the council that elected Abul A'la Maududi as the Ameer and was himself elected as the Vice-Ameer (Naib Ameer). However, due to ideological and organizational differences, he distanced himself from the organization in 1942.

Following his departure from Jamaat-e-Islami, he, along with Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi, became associated with the Tablighi Jamaat and its founder, Muhammad Ilyas Kandhlawi. He compiled the founder's discourses in the book "Malfuzat-e-Maulana Muhammad Ilyas."

In 1943, Maulana Nomani was elected as a member of the Majlis-e-Shura (Executive Council) of Darul Uloom Deoband. He was also a member of the Muslim World League (Rabita al-Alam al-Islami).

His magnum opus, "Ma'ariful Hadith," is considered the most popular, simple, and authentic Urdu commentary on the Prophetic Traditions. His other highly acclaimed books include "Islam Kya Hai" (What is Islam?), "Deen-o-Shariat," and "Qur'an Aap Se Kya Kehta Hai."

Death: Maulana Muhammad Manzoor Nomani passed away on May 4, 1997, in Lucknow.
