Profile of Rafaqat Ali Shahid
Dr. Rafaqat Ali Shahid is an Urdu teacher, author and researcher with a strong academic focus on classical Urdu literature, poetry, criticism and literary history. He has an in-depth knowledge of classical Urdu texts and nineteenth-century Urdu periodicals, the latter being the subject of his PhD research. His scholarly work includes numerous publications and research projects dealing with important aspects of Urdu literary and cultural history.
Dr. Shahid has taught Urdu language and literature at the PhD, MPhil, MA and BS levels. He has also contributed to academic and curriculum development in his capacity as Assistant Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Urdu at Lahore Garrison University.
One of the most significant aspects of Dr. Shahid’s research is his work on the discovery, recovery and introduction of rare and little-known Urdu texts. Among his important discoveries is the missing fifth volume of Tilism-e-Hoshruba by Syed Muhammad Husain Jah, originally published in the last decade of the nineteenth century. He has also brought to scholarly attention the rare eighteenth-century tale Qissa-e-Nau Ratan-e-Jahan, Dastan-e-Anwar-ush-Shamsain, a rare volume from the Dastan-e-Amir Hamza tradition, and Karnama-e-Ishrat, a medical text written in classical Urdu prose by Qurban Ali Baig Salik Dehlavi, a renowned pupil of Mirza Ghalib.
His research has also contributed to the recovery and introduction of Abdul Halim Sharar’s social monthly Ittehad, published from Lucknow. Through such work, Dr. Shahid has played an important role in bringing neglected and previously inaccessible works of Urdu prose and poetry back into the scholarly and literary record.
His continuing research projects include several other works that have been completed or are at advanced stages of preparation for publication. His scholarship reflects a sustained engagement with the preservation, documentation and critical study of Urdu’s classical and historical literary heritage.
