Profile of Abdul Ghaffar Mudholi

Real Name : Abdul Ghaffar

Born : 05 Sep 1905 | Andhra Pradesh

Died : 13 Feb 1982 | Andhra Pradesh

Identity: Children's author, playwright, eminent teacher of Jamia Millia Islamia, and author of 'Jamia Ki Kahani'.

Abdul Ghaffar Madholi was born on September 5, 1905, in Andhra Pradesh. He moved to Delhi at a young age. He breathed new life into the genre of playwriting for children. He spent most of his life as a teacher at Jamia Millia Islamia, serving first in the primary school and later in the Teachers' Training College.

He was the soul of Jamia's famous 'Urdu Correspondence Course' and compiled several textbooks for it. Under the movement led by Dr. Zakir Husain to create reformative literature for children, the field of playwriting was assigned to Abdul Ghaffar Madholi. There was a severe dearth of plays for children in Urdu literature, which Madholi Sahab filled with his creative endeavors. He wrote plays that children could perform themselves in schools.

His famous plays include 'Qaum Parast Talib-e-Ilm' (The Nationalist Student), 'School Ki Zindagi' (School Life), 'Mehnat' (Hard Work), 'Chhota Larka' (The Little Boy), 'Chor Larka' (The Thief Boy), and 'Bachon Ki Adalat Mein Dawe' (Claims in Children's Court). In addition to plays, he wrote stories for the upbringing of children, such as 'Bachon Ka Insaf' (Children's Justice) and 'How Children Can Stay Safe from Elders'.

A monumental achievement of Abdul Ghaffar Madholi is his book 'Jamia Ki Kahani' (The Story of Jamia), published in 1965. This book records the 27-year history of Jamia from its foundation (1920) to India's independence (1947). Educationists believe that it is impossible to compile the history of Jamia Millia Islamia without studying this book. He also incorporated the experiences from his other book, 'Ek Muallim Ki Zindagi' (A Teacher’s Life), into this historical narrative.

'Campfire Ki Naqlein': This book is an excellent gift for Scouts, in which humorous skits, songs, slogans, and the art of acting are taught in a very engaging manner. He also compiled several textbooks for primary and middle school students that were taught in Delhi's government schools for a long period.

Death: He passed away in 1982.
