Profile of Fatima Mehru
Fatima Mehru is a prominent voice in contemporary Urdu free verse poetry, having formally begun her literary journey in 2018. Her early poems were published in the Urdu literary magazine Tastir, and later, her short stories and poems continued to grace various journals in Urdu, English, and Punjabi. Her ghazals and poems have appeared in the esteemed Urdu journal Lauh, while her Urdu translations of poets such as Nizar Qabbani, Charles Bukowski, Irfan Malik, Agha Shahid Ali, and Federico García Lorca have been published in both national and international journals.
Fatima Mehru is currently working on translations of selected poems by Charles Bukowski and Lorca. Her first poetry collection, Darya aur Dariche ("The River and the Windows"), was published in 2021, and her second collection, Na Suni Gayi Awaazen ("Unheard Voices"), is forthcoming. Translations of her poems have been published in English, Persian, Balochi, Sindhi, Saraiki, German, Telugu, and Hindi, which is a testament to the global resonance of her voice.
