Smoke; the smoke-fire over which a Hindū ascetic sits inhaling the smoke by way of penance (it is also often practised in the manner of dharnā, q.v., to extort compliance with demands); fumigation, or the burning of incense (to purify the air, or as a medical application, or to exorcise one possessed):—dhūnī-pānī or dhūnī-pānī-kā sanjog, s.m. Familiar friendship, intimacy, attachment (from the assumption that, in the former birth, one of the parties was a guru, and the other his disciple, employed in kindling for him the dhūnī, bringing his pānī, &c.):—dhūnī denā (-ko), To smoke, to fumigate (either medicinally, or in order to exorcise one possessed);—to dun, to importune (see dhūnī lagānā):—dhunī ramānā, dhūnī lagānā, v.n. To light a fire and sit over it after the manner of jogīs; to become a jogī:—dhūnī lagānā, v.n. To have recourse to the smoking process in order to extort compliance with a demand, to persevere, or to insist obstinately, in a demand;—to fumigate, &c. (=dhūnī denā):—dhūnī lenā (-), To inhale smoke (as a penance); to undergo fumigation.
