Profile of Najmul Ghani Khan Najmi Rampuri
Pen Name : 'Najmi'
Real Name : Mohammad Najmul Ghani
Born : 08 Oct 1859 | Rampur, Uttar pradesh
Died : 01 Jul 1941 | Rampur, Uttar pradesh
Identity: Renowned Historian, Expert in Prosody & Linguistics, Distinguished Physician, Eminent Researcher, and Poet.
In the annals of Urdu literature and the intellectual history of the Subcontinent, Maulana Hakim Muhammad Najmul Ghani Khan Rampuri (Pen name: Najmi) emerges as a versatile personality whose academic triumphs span historiography, prosody, Unani medicine, linguistics, and poetry. Born on October 8, 1859, into a noble scholarly family of Rampur, this dervish-like scholar accomplished extraordinary feats during his 82-year life that are hard to find in the modern era. His family had been dedicated to jurisprudence, Sufism, and literary arts for generations.
Hakim Najmul Ghani received his initial training in the academic environment of Rajasthan, after which he pursued higher education at the famous Madrasa-e-Aliya in Rampur. Here, he had the opportunity to benefit from legendary teachers like Maulana Abdul Haq Khairabadi, and in 1886, he secured the first position in 'Dars-e-Nizami,' proving his God-gifted talents. In his practical life, he held various significant positions, including In-charge of the Unani Clinic, Librarian of the Raza Library, and courtier to Nawab Hamid Ali Khan, but his true identity remains his literary contributions.
His intellectual stature was acknowledged by the giants of his era. Khwaja Hasan Nizami described him as a researcher and fearless historian who did justice to the historical defense of Aurangzeb Alamgir through his writings on Rajputana. A masterpiece of his historiography is 'Akhbar al-Sanadeed', an authentic document on the history of Rohilkhand and the Afghans. Allama Iqbal praised it as a fine example of history, commending his simple yet effective writing style.
Alongside history, his mastery over prosody and the art of poetry was so profound that his work 'Bahr-ul-Fasahat' holds the status of an 'Encyclopedia' on the subject in the Urdu language. This voluminous book remains the final authority for students of poetry to this day. Furthermore, Hakim Sahib was an eminent practitioner of Unani medicine. His medical treatises, such as 'Khazanat-ul-Adwiya' and 'Khawas-ul-Adwiya', are highly popular among physicians and represent a treasure of medical knowledge.
Death: After living a full and productive academic life of 82 years, he passed away on July 1, 1941, in Rampur.
