Identity: Critic, researcher, and noted scholar of Ghalib

Dr. Syed Moeen-ur-Rahman was born on 5 November 1942 in Bhatinda, Patiala State (British India). After his early education, he completed his Intermediate from Bahawal College, Bahawalnagar in 1959. He later earned a B.A. from Urdu College Karachi, an LL.B. from Urdu Law College Karachi, and an M.A. in Urdu from the University of Karachi in 1964. In 1972, he obtained his PhD from the University of Sindh.

He began his academic career as a lecturer in the Urdu Department at Government College Bahawalnagar. Later, he served at Oriental College Lahore, F.C. College Lahore, and Government College Faisalabad. From 1981 to 2002, he remained Professor and Head of the Urdu Department at Government College Lahore. He also served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the same institution. He was the editor of the scholarly journal Tahqiq Nama, which gained recognition as an important journal of Urdu research under his supervision.

Dr. Moeen-ur-Rahman held a distinguished position in Urdu criticism, Ghalib studies, and Iqbal studies. A major portion of his scholarly work focused on the personality, poetry, and intellectual legacy of Mirza Ghalib. His books such as Ghalib aur Inquilab-e-Sattavan, Nuqush-e-Ghalib, Bazyaft-e-Ghalib, Ghalib ka Ilmi Sarmaya, and Ghalibiyat ka Tahqiqi Mutala established him among the leading scholars of Ghalib.

He also rendered valuable services in the field of Iqbal studies. In works like Jamiat mein Iqbal ka Tahqiqi wa Tauzihi Mutala and Jahan-e-Iqbal, he examined various dimensions of understanding Iqbal and academic research related to him. His scholarly range is also reflected in books such as Urdu Drama: Fun aur Manzilen, Fort William College, Mutala-e-Yaldram, and Quaid-e-Azam aur Lyallpur.

Dr. Moeen-ur-Rahman also contributed significantly in the fields of editing and compilation. His edited version of Diwan-e-Ghalib Nuskha-e-Khwaja, the compilation of Aap Beeti Rashid Ahmad Siddiqui, and edited works like Dil ki Kitab testify to his refined scholarly taste and research-oriented approach.

Death: Dr. Syed Moeen-ur-Rahman passed away on 15 August 2005 in Lahore.
