Profile of Asghar Mahdi
Pen Name : 'Nazmi'
Real Name : Syed Asghar Mehdi
Syed Asghar Mehdi Nazmi was a distinguished Urdu poet known for his refined poetic expression, cultural sensitivity, and deep emotional resonance. Born in 1932 in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, he was the elder brother of the noted poet Sagar Mehdi. After the Partition of India, he migrated to Pakistan in 1954 and eventually settled in Karachi.
Nazmi possessed command over various genres of Urdu poetry, though the ghazal became his most recognized form. His poetry reflects themes of love, migration, inner suffering, human emotions, and the memory of cultural roots. Marked by simplicity and classical elegance, his verse carries both emotional depth and literary grace.
During his lifetime, his first poetry collection, Khwab Tere Khayal Ke (1983), was published. After his death, Mauj Mauj Tishnagi (1992) and his complete collected works Kulliyat-e-Sukhan (2020) were published in Karachi.
Syed Asghar Mehdi Nazmi’s poetry represents a meaningful blend of classical tradition and modern sensibility. He is remembered among those Urdu poets who gave artistic dignity to the experience of migration and emotional displacement.
