Identity: Researcher, Critic, and Writer Known for Her Significant Research on Urdu Travel Literature

Dr. Bushra Rahman was born on 10 January 1940 in Gorakhpur into an educated and literary family. Her father, Hakim Abdul Quddus, was a well-known physician, while her elder brother, Professor Nejatullah Siddiqi, was an internationally renowned economist and Islamic scholar. The scholarly and literary atmosphere of her home played an important role in shaping her intellectual personality and love for reading from an early age.

She received her early education at home and later passed her high school examinations from Aligarh. In 1960, she married Major Siddiqur Rahman. Despite domestic responsibilities, she continued her academic pursuits and earned a B.A. (Honours) in Urdu in 1968, followed by an M.A. in Urdu from Gorakhpur University. Under the supervision of Professor Mahmood Ilahi, she completed her PhD in 1986 with a dissertation titled Urdu ke Ghair Mazhabi Safarname (Non-Religious Urdu Travelogues).

Dr. Bushra Rahman’s most notable scholarly contribution is her research work Urdu ke Ghair Mazhabi Safarname, in which she presented a comprehensive study of the tradition, evolution, and various phases of Urdu travel writing. For this work, she studied hundreds of books and critically examined the literary and artistic dimensions of Urdu travelogues.

She also carried out important research on the personality, journalism, and intellectual contributions of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. In addition, she edited the writings of Majnun Gorakhpuri and authored a separate book on his life and literary achievements. Her writings are marked by seriousness, scholarly integrity, and a refined literary style. Her articles appeared in reputed literary journals such as Nigar, Aaj Kal, and Naya Daur.

Death: Dr. Bushra Rahman passed away in 2009.
