Profile of Sayyada Jafar
Real Name : Syeda Jafar
Born : 05 Apr 1934 | Kareem Nagar, Telangana
Died : 24 Jun 2016 | Hyderabad, Telangana
LCCN :n84199096
Identity: A renowned Indian female researcher, expert of Dakhni studies, critic, and linguist
Syeda Jafar was born in 1934 in Karimnagar district of Hyderabad into a scholarly family. Among her ancestors was Syed Razi, the compiler of Nahj al-Balagha, and the noted poet Syed Muhammad Wala Mousavi.
She received her early education at Madrasa Nampally Girls School, which marked the beginning of her academic journey. The composite culture of Hyderabad and the intellectual environment of Osmania University played a significant role in shaping her scholarly outlook.
In 1959, she earned her PhD from Osmania University with a dissertation titled “The Evolution of the Urdu Essay,” which was a pioneering research work by a woman at that time.
Her teaching career began at Osmania University, where she served as Reader, Professor, and later as Head of the Department of Urdu. In February 1991, she moved to the University of Hyderabad (Hyderabad Central University), from where she retired as a Professor.
Dr. Syeda Jafar’s primary field was Dakhni studies, in which she carried forward the scholarly tradition of Dr. Mohiuddin Qadri Zor. She worked on Shah Turab Chishti’s masnavi Man Samjhaavan, establishing its connection with Marathi influences. In her edition of Kulliyat-e-Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, she incorporated twelve newly discovered ghazals obtained from London. Her other notable works include Dakhni Rubaiyat, Sukh Anjan, Selections of Dakhni Prose, Masnavi Yusuf Zulekha, Chandar Badan wa Mahiyar, Masnavi Mah Paikar, Jannat Singar, The Tradition of Qasida in Dakhni Literature, Masnavi Guldasta, and Nausarhar. Her compiled Dakhni Dictionary, containing over thirteen and a half thousand entries, is considered a landmark work, documenting word origins and usage.
In literary history, she co-authored with Dr. Gyan Chand Jain the five-volume History of Urdu Literature (up to 1700). Additionally, her four-volume History of Urdu Literature (from the age of Mir to the Progressive Movement) reflects her vast scholarly competence.
She also authored works such as Master Ramchandra and Urdu Prose, Mahak aur Mahak, and Fan ki Jaanch, along with monographs on Dr. Zor, Makhdoom, and Firaq for the Sahitya Akademi.
Her writing style was insightful, balanced, and scholarly. According to Professor Ehtesham Hussain, her intellectual abilities were equally strong in both research and criticism. She maintained a deep command over both classical Dakhni literature and modern literary trends.
Death: She passed away on 24 June 2016 in Hyderabad.
