Maulana Shah Moinuddin Ahmad Nadwi was among the eminent scholars and researchers of the Indian subcontinent who made significant contributions to Islamic history, biographical writing, and academic research. He was a serious-minded historian, researcher, and a refined prose writer who dedicated his entire life to the advancement of knowledge and scholarship.

Moinuddin Ahmad Nadwi was born in 1903 in the town of Rudauli, in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh. His early education was supervised by his maternal grandfather, Shah Sharafuddin. He later studied at the renowned Darul Uloom Nizamia, Farangi Mahal in Lucknow, and subsequently enrolled at Nadwatul Ulama. There, he had the privilege of studying under the eminent scholar and historian Syed Sulaiman Nadwi, from whom he acquired a deep understanding of writing, research, and historical studies.

After completing his education in 1924, he joined Darul Musannefin Shibli Academy in Azamgarh at the invitation of Syed Sulaiman Nadwi. This institution became the center of his academic life, where he devoted himself to teaching, research, and authorship for many years.

In 1946, when Syed Sulaiman Nadwi moved to Bhopal, the administrative responsibilities of the academy and the editorship of its prestigious journal “Ma’arif” were entrusted to Moinuddin Ahmad Nadwi. After Sulaiman Nadwi migrated to Pakistan in 1950, Moinuddin Nadwi assumed full leadership of the academy in 1951 and remained its head until his death. Under his leadership, the academy further strengthened its scholarly and research standards.

Apart from the academy, he was also associated with institutions such as the Lucknow Urdu Academy and Aligarh Muslim University, actively contributing to academic and literary activities.

Moinuddin Ahmad Nadwi’s scholarly contributions are extensive and diverse. He authored numerous important works on Islamic history, biography, translation, and literature. His notable work “Tarikh-e-Islam” (in four volumes) holds special importance and was included in the curriculum of Nadwatul Ulama and other institutions.

His other significant works include “Hayat-e-Sulaiman”, a comprehensive biography of his teacher Syed Sulaiman Nadwi. In addition, works like “Al-Muhajireen”, “Seerat-us-Sahaba”, “Tabi‘een”, and “Deen-e-Rahmat” reflect his scholarly depth.

In the field of translation, he rendered valuable services as well. He translated the Arabic work “Al-Islam wa al-Hadarat al-Arabiyyah” by Jurji Zaydan into Urdu as “Islam aur Arabi Tamaddun.” He also translated “Anwar al-Uyun fi Asrar al-Maknun” by Sheikh Abdul Quddus Gangohi, which deals with the life and teachings of Sheikh Abdul Haq Rudauli. His other translated works include “Arab ki Maujooda Hukumatain.”

Besides books, he contributed numerous scholarly and literary articles to the journal “Ma’arif” and presented papers at various academic forums. A selection of his literary essays has been published under the title “Adabi Nuqoosh.”

Death: Moinuddin Ahmad Nadwi passed away on 13 December 1974.
